Underground Magazines

The Princess Royal Fortress contains two underground magazines, the Princess Royal Battery and the Plantagenet Battery. The magazines were constructed in 1892 and were used to store cordite required to fire the large coastal guns that protected the harbour. Today you can wander through the magazine and experience the solid walls and original floors. Peer down into the underground chambers if you dare!

The National Anzac Centre, Forts Store and other public buildings within Princess Royal Fortress are closed to the public until further notice due to the current COVID-19 health emergency.

The City of Albany regrets these closures, however it is in the interest of the health and safety of the community and our staff.

All online tickets, vouchers and gift certificates will be honoured when we reopen.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are advised that this exhibition may include names, images, and references to people who have since passed away.
